How do you impress your new employer?
In a recent survey, the following things were important to employers.
Communication skills
The ability to communicate well – both verbally and in writing – was important to employers. Being able to listen and understand instructions was also important.
Honesty
Employers like honesty. If you’ve made a mistake, own up to it.
Technical competency
Employers like staff to be competent, with skills that meet to job’s requirements. Improving your skills along the way is also important.
Work Ethic
Do what you were employed to do. Be at work on time, ready to meet deadlines to the best of your ability. Always do your best in everything you do.
Flexibility
Sometimes, business circumstances change; being flexible to meet the demands of the business is always looked upon favourably.
Determination
Managers usually give challenging goals, but they are – overall – achievable. The key to this is to work efficiently to meet all deadlines. If you need help – ASK!
Ability to get on work other work colleagues
It is essential to get on with your work colleagues. Treat them as you would like to be treated yourself. Be friendly, helpful and smile.
Willingness to add to your skill base
Businesses grow and change – and employers like staff who can do the same. Always look to expand your knowledge and explore new ways of doing things. Also, have an interest in learning and be willing to share your knowledge with others.
Problem-solving skills
Employers like staff who can solve problems with the minimum of help. Also, if you can support a colleague – do so!
Loyalty
Employers want to be able to trust their employees to work professionally. Employers do not want to hire staff who can not be trusted to represent the best interests of the company.
