“It’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” goes the old saying.
So how do you take positive and meaningful steps in your career?
To help you achieve your career goals at a company, it’s worth having the following in your inner circle.
1) An office “Bestie” If you have a work “best friend” not only will your job satisfaction be improved, but your productivity and performance will be enhanced. Bear in mind, however, that the relationship has to form organically.
2) HR Confidant If you’re working in a company that has a dedicated personnel department, it’s worth having a confidant in the department. A reliable HR contact can inform you of the latest career openings before they are advertised. It is also worth noting that with a confidant in the HR department if you want to move departments or locations, expressing these thoughts will ensure your contact “keeps an eye out” for any opportunities that may be suitable.
3) A sponsor with clout It is also worth having a mentor on your side, someone with the influence and someone who can endorse your skills and put in a good word for you. Foster a good relationship with this person.
4) A competitor It is also worth having a “competitor” in your inner circle; someone who you are in competition with will help you improve your own skillset.
5) A Gatekeeper What is a gatekeeper? This could be the PA to the boss, the receptionist or an assistant to the C-suite. This person is important because they have access to the higher-ups, and it’s worth getting to know them as they are usually in the know.
