After your interview, you may want to show your interest in securing the position. What are good questions to ask at ...
How to maximise the first 5 minutes of your interview
Remember that your interview starts the minute you leave your home! If you are using public transport, you never know who you may bump into on the train or bus. Also remember when you enter the building where your interview will be, you never know who you may be sharing a lift with, for example.
Always make sure you arrive at least 10 minutes early. This allows you to use the washroom to freshen up. Use this time to cool down if you are hot.
Switch your mobile phone off; nothing is more ignorant than when your mobile phone rings midway through an interview.
Make small talk with the receptionist, you may be able to glean some interesting company information from the receptionist, which you could use in your interview. For example, you may find out that the company has won an award; you can use this information in your interview.
Treat everyone you meet as your interviewer; you may have already viewed your interviewer’s profile on LinkedIn, so know what they look like, but you should always treat everyone you meet politely and respectfully; that person who walks pasted you in the corridor could the interviewer’s assistant or boss!
Create a strong first impression; when you are introduced smile, shake hands firmly, make eye contact, and generally make it look as though you are pleased to meet the interviewer. In everything you do, project an attitude of energy, enthusiasm and interest. It has been suggested that first impressions last; a third of bosses say they know within the first 90 seconds whether they are going to hire a person.
Small talk in the first 5 minutes is vital to get right; if the interviewer mentions something about their family, be ready to tell them something about yours. If the interviewer mentions the traffic, make a comment about your journey. If the interviewer doesn’t instigate any small talk, simply mention something about the weather. Avoid anything political!
When your interview begins properly, be honest, be prepared and be keen.
