Is job-hopping a good or bad idea?

  Posted on 03/10/2019

Job-hopping – moving from one job to the next - has many merits; it provides individuals with an opportunity to grow and develop their skills and experience, improve their remuneration package and learn from other individuals. It also allows people to find a better culture fit.

In a recent survey, it was found that Birmingham was the main job-hopping City in the UK, with the population to have changed their job on average 24 times. Leeds came in second place with people changing their jobs on average 23 times, whilst London came in at third place with people changing their careers on average 21 times.

The most loyal employees were located in Belfast and Glasgow, with people changing their jobs on average 12 times. So how does job-hopping change across the generations? Millennials are the most notorious in the workplace; it was found that over 16% of millennials had had over 10 jobs since they started their career; it was found that 18.68% of people aged 35 and over had over 10 jobs throughout their working career. The reasons people are job-hopping is wide and varied.

The most common reason for job-hopping was to improve their salary (22.8%), whilst it was found that 15.7% of people changed jobs because of “too much stress.” It was also found that 4.6% of people chose to leave their job due to a lack of stability.

Interestingly, the stigma of job hopping is losing the negative perception it once had; more and more hiring managers are looking at the positives of individuals such as their knowledge and experience rather than the number of jobs they had had.
