According to a recent survey by CareerBuilder, 70% of employers use social media to screen candidates during the hiring process, whilst 43% of employers use social media to check on current employees.
There are many reasons why hiring managers check social media; one of the reasons is to make sure the potential employee fits in with the company culture and team. The survey also found that nearly half of employers wouldn’t call a person to attend an interview if they couldn’t find them online.
The study also found that certain things left employers with a bad impression, including provocative or inappropriate photos, links to criminal behaviour, pictures of potential employees drinking or using drugs, and comments that bad mouthed past employers. An unprofessional screen name was also found to be a reason not to invite a candidate in for an interview.
The study was based on more than 1000 hiring managers from a variety of different industry sectors across the UK.
