"Power dressing" at work

  Posted on 16/07/2019

What is power dressing?

Power dressing at work is dressing smart; dressing better can actually help you to get you ahead at work, and also contributes to the way others perceive you. Here we have compiled a few tips on how to power dress…

Dress as if you care

Some companies have a strict dress code, and will give you guidelines on what you can, and can not, wear at work.

You should always dress professionally; if you wear casual clothes it is often perceived that you take a casual approach to your work duties.

Dress suitably

Different companies have different cultures – but if you are dealing with customers or clients, remember you want to fit into their environment – especially when visiting them. A well-pressed suit is never out of place – if you wear a shirt and tie this is also a good idea. Even if your clients dress casually, it is easy to take off your suit jacket and tie to look more casual, but it is impossible to dress upwards from casual to more formal.

Avoid showing too much skin

Try to avoid wearing skirts that are too short, or low necklines. Many people also have tattoos – it is advisable to try and keep these covered as much as possible, especially when visiting clients.

Be well-groomed

Always be well-groomed, smelling nice. Keep nails clean, hair neat and tidy. Also, make sure your clothes are ironed and wrinkle-free.

Understand the importance of fit

Wearing clothes that are too large looks funny; wearing clothes that are too tight can actually be uncomfortable for you – especially when you consider a working day could be 8 hours or more.

Maintain your style

Be consistent – if you are a modern dresser, keep with that style. You are an individual and should not try to dress like another person.
