Since 2010, more than half a million businesses have been set up taking on more than 4 million workers, according to official figures.
As a result, employment is at a record high at 32.7 million – the vast majority of people are employed within the private sector. According to data, only 16% of British workers are now employed by the state; in comparison, 22% of people are employed by the state in France, and 30% are employed by the state in Sweden. Further analysis of the data revealed that a record 72% of adult females are also in work.
The tech industry was found to be the fastest expanding sector, with 86,000 new jobs created last year, and over 449,000 since 2010.
Public sector has also seen a boost in worker numbers, with an extra 350,000 jobs in the education sector, and over 550,000 in health and social work.
