Workplace party "rules"

  Posted on 19/08/2019

Work social events can help bond team members together.

But what are the “unspoken rules” you should follow at a work party?

The following may help you…

Don’t drink too much

This is a number one priority; do not over-indulge. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions and your judgement. Your actions – when under the influence of alcohol – could cause you to become the subject of workplace gossip – or worse could get you dismissed for gross misconduct. Know your alcohol limits, and don’t go beyond them. Have one (or maybe two drinks, if you can handle it). Always remember, never drink too much.

It’s not singles bar

Work social events are not like a singles bar! Remember, you probably know very little about your work colleagues. Workplace romances – or one-night stands – can be disastrous.

Don’t flirt or act in a sexually provocative manner

Flirting has its place – and that’s not at a workplace social event. Flirting can result in colleagues losing respect for you and can result in some very embarrassing situations. As a worse case scenario, inappropriate behaviour can result in a claim of sexual harassment against you.

Don’t bring uninvited guests

Remember, a workplace social event is for workplace colleagues; bringing uninvited friends is not particularly a good idea. It may anger your boss, and your guest may feel uncomfortable too.

Guests welcome?

Watch their behaviour If your social event does allow for a guest, make sure your “plus-one” behaves in an appropriate way. Remind your guest that it is YOUR WORKPLACE social event, and you have to face colleagues in the future. Your guest’s behaviour reflects on you.

Don’t talk about people behind their backs

Workplace social events are often used as a means to bond teams together. Do not indulge in gossip behind someone’s back. Think about how you would feel if people were talking about you, behind your back. And remember – gossip always gets back to the person – you may have some uncomfortable explaining to do.
