Arriving late for work is costing the UK economy £9 billion, a survey suggests. The study has found that an average of 590,000 workers show up late for work every single day.
Of all the excuses given, traffic problems caused by roadworks accounted for 41% of lateness, whilst public transport delays accounted for 29%.
Unforeseen circumstances such as someone being unwell accounted for 25%, bad weather was 18%, sleeping through the alarm was 14% and forgetting something accounted for 12% of lateness.
Late employees lost an average of 97 minutes per month, costing British employers £305 per head, per year. Of those who are late, it was found that three quarters of employees revealed that lateness made them feel guilty; 48% of people felt that their work colleagues lost respect for them after failing to show up on time. It was also found that 63% of workers admitted that they were affected by the stress of being late, whilst 39% said the after effects of lateness negatively impacted on their entire day. It took an average of 49 minutes for employees to feel calm, after arriving late for work.
Additionally, 1 in 10 people had arrived late for an interview, and 11% said poor timekeeping contributed to losing a client.
Of the 1000 employees surveyed by Heathrow Express, 82% of people said they believed that being late was unprofessional.
